Hey, everyone!
I would like all of the members of this project to point out things that they find weird in media translated to their native languages. In this post, I think we should debate about how translation is carried in every country, that way the localizers' team will have a much easier time working on the final product. I know that we do not have any real purpose yet, but this might buy us time.

There is one thing I didn't ask on Discord yet, and it's when you have to translate play on words, puns or jokes.
I imagine the rule is: IF you can find an elegant way to convey the joke or adapt it, do it?

It is a difficult question to solve. Basically, you have to be REALLY sure you understand the joke and it has to sound really natural in your target language. But yeah, that's pretty much the rule. :)

We talked about this on Discord but I'll ask again since it's in the forum now: When should you localize/change the name of a character? What purpose does it serve?

We shouldn't localize character names unless we encounter one of the following situations:
1.- The name is offensive/ridiculous in the target language (from now on TL.)
2.- The name has unreadable characters in our TL (in which case it should only be adapted.)
3.- The name has a very unpractical approach in our TL (a supposedly exotic name which is common in the TL, for instance.) But there are ways around this without having to adapt it.
4.- The name has a play on words that is NECESSARY and we know how to convey its meaning in our TL.
I cannot think of any other situation, but if you have doubts about specific cases, you can always ask me. :)

What about Djinns and Summons, does this apply as well ?
For djinns it was basically items, objects or thingy name.

That depends - it's entirely possible that we in the design team will have fun with nomenclature. One of the more recent posts in the Djinn post describes a set of nine names based on the Greek and Roman winds - the eight directions, as well as the general name for them. That might be tricky to localize unless the language either has exonyms or familiarity with Greco-roman mythology.

zanondorf Actually, yes, it applies to djinns aswell. WitchRolina And IDK what is the Design team doing, but the story, character creation, and names should be part of the Worldbuilding and Writing teams' job (as it was done on all professional projects I've studied at University; due to productivity necessities). Design team's job should be all about mechanics, puzzles, maps, and overall gameplay. Not to sound rude or interfere in your work, but doing things out of that field is counterproductive and affects development.

Maybe you decided that but that isn't what is considered optimal in professional environments and I still find it counterproductive, but this is not the place to discuss it.
